SCxbus Adapter
Internode Connectivity Solution
NOTE : Available ONLY in ISA (NOT PCI)

Features and Benefits
  • Takes full advantage of the 1024 bidirectional time slots of the SCbus(tm) by spreading the application across multiple PCs (nodes)
  • Blocks SCxbus time slots to increase total system bandwidth up to 4,096 time slots across multiple PCs (nodes)
  • Switchless design takes advantage of the inherent switching capabilities of the SCbus
  • Connects up to 16 nodes within a 15 meter distance
  • Fault tolerant clocking
  • Background diagnostics continually monitor clock, frame, and data integrity-faults are immediately reported to application
  • "Hot plugability" means that a node can be removed from the SCxbus without corrupting live traffic nor disturbing the entire system
Applications
  • Call center
  • Telemarketing
  • Voice/audio response systems
  • Predictive dialer
  • Automated call rerouting applications (debit card, international callback, long distance resale)
  • Wireless gateway
  • Programmable switches
  • Audiotex
  • Operator services
  • Test equipment
  • Protocol conversion equipment
The SCxbus Adapter(tm) from Dialogic is a simple, economical solution for the SCSA Multi-Node Architecture (MNA). The SCxbus Adapter extends the SCbus into other nodes by providing direct signal conversion between the SCbus' TTL signals and the SCxbus' SCSI-III-style RS-485 signals. A switchless design is used where each node is mapped to a desired number of physical data streams, where each stream carries 64 time slots using TDM. This permits 1024 full-duplex devices to have complete nonblocked, internode communications while maintaining a simple, single-stage switching model.

In addition, the application developer can use a time slot blocking model to block the time slots assigned to a specific resource (i.e., voice processing time slots) within a node, allowing for added bandwidth.

The mapping arrangement can be reconfigured by the application developer upon system start up.

Distributing an application across several nodes can present challenges. For example, suppose a predictive dialer reaches a customer and needs to connect the call to an available agent without delay. Conventional technology cannot provide a low, deterministic switching delay when an agent is located on a different node than the outbound trunk. The switchless design offers the capability to reduce these switching delays.

The SCxbus Adapter provides an effective foundation for a fault-tolerant system design. A fault-tolerant clocking scheme is supported. On-board diagnostics continuously and non-intrusively monitor the SCxbus interface for clock, frame, and data integrity. The application is notified if a fault is detected. Node(s) can be disconnected from the SCxbus cable with power on or they can be powered down without disturbing the data traffic between other nodes.

Configurations

Both the internal SCbus and the external SCxbus contain 16 separate TDM data streams, each of which carries 64 time slots. All devices within a node have their transmitters mapped to one or more of the SCbus data streams. The SCxbus Adapter maps a node's SCbus transmit data streams, 1 through 16, to corresponding SCxbus data streams. The remaining data streams in a node are made available to listen to the time slots allocated in the other nodes. The process is repeated for all nodes. This mapping is defined at system configuration time. Since a device can listen to any of the 1024 time slots, all devices have complete nonblocked access to one another. All switching is performed using the local SCbus command set API.

In a blocking scenario, all transmit time slots for a selected resource can be configured as local to the node. In this case, there would be added bandwidth for the entire system, allowing up to 4096 full-duplex time slots in the system.
